The UK government has seized control of Chineseowned British Steel using emergency powers passed in a rare Saturday parliamentary session. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said nationalisation of the Scunthorpe plant, employing 2,700 workers, was likely to prevent owner Jingye from closing blast furnaces and ending UK primary steel production. The legislation received Royal Assent after fasttrack approval by both Houses of Parliament.
