Climate Change Intensifies Pollen, Worsening Allergy Symptoms

Rising global temperatures are extending pollen seasons and increasing pollen counts, but climate change is also triggering extreme allergy events with deadly consequences, experts warn. One such event occurred in Melbourne, Australia, on November 21, 2016, when a thunderstorm turned the air toxic, overwhelming emergency services and claiming lives. As the storm formed, it drew trillions of pollen particles into the clouds, where rain, lightning, and humidity shattered them into microscopic fragments. These tiny particles were then carried back to the ground, where people inhaled them deep into their lungs. By 6 p.m., emergency calls surged as residents struggled to breathe. Hospitals were inundated with patients suffering severe respiratory distress, while ambulance services became so overwhelmed that some patients could not be reached in time. Emergency rooms recorded eight times the usual number of breathingrelated cases, while asthmarelated hospital admissions spiked nearly tenfold. Tragically, 10 people died, including a 20yearold law student who collapsed on her lawn while waiting for an ambulance. Her family attempted CPR, but she could not be saved. One survivor recalled feeling fine one moment and fighting for breath just 30 minutes later. "It was insane," he later told reporters from his hospital bed. Paul Beggs, an environmental health scientist and professor at Macquarie University in Sydney, described the event as unprecedented. "It was an absolutely massive event. Catastrophic," he said. "The people in Melbourne—doctors, nurses, pharmacists—they all didn’t know what was happening."
