“Why do the wicked get away with despising God? They think, ‘God will never call us to account.’ But You see the trouble and grief they cause. You take note of it and punish them. The helpless put their trust in You. You defend the orphans.” – Psalm 10:13-14 (NLT)
As I was going through my reading for today and reflecting back on it, I felt the Lord emphasize this passage specifically. I feel as if there are many in the church (and even the world as a whole) who are asking these things. I get the sense that many are being overwhelmed with the weight of what is happening in the world around us right now.
I wish I could tell you that things are going to have the appearance of getting better, but I cannot bring you a message of that regard without it being a lie from the pit of hell. But what I can bring you is a message of hope from the Lord. A message of the confidence that we can have in Him because He is God and He is in control. He holds it all in His hands, and He is not caught off guard nor is He overwhelmed by the events playing out before us. In fact, He Himself gave us warnings all through the years concerning the days in which we now live, so that His people could pay attention and be ready for the trials of these days. He has provided us the hope and safety we need, if we will only remain planted firm in Him.
The evil that we see today, it is nothing new. In fact, it has been here for a very long time, festering under the surface. It just so happens that it is all bubbling to the surface at one time, as if from a volcano violently erupting. What we are witnessing is the culmination of things which have long gone unseen and unhindered. But they are all happening for a purpose, and that purpose is ultimately God’s Kingdom purpose.
God is not surprised by it. Even more important, He is not sitting idly by, watching evil thrive without doing anything. No, He is positioning His people. He is setting the stage for the final scenes of this age. The enemy amplifies the evils of this world in an attempt to blind us from the things that God is doing, but God cannot be overcome by the ways and the plans of the enemy. The enemy knows that his time is very short, and because of this he is bringing the intensity in this time. But it is all in vain, for he cannot stand before the Holy One of Israel.
I understand more than most the weightiness of these days. I understand how easy it can be to get sucked into that dark tunnel of hopelessness, where nothing seems to ever go according to justice’s sake. But let me tell you, there is a Hope, a Shining Light, that causes all of that to become nothing. When He is allowed to penetrate into the very depths of the heart, every aspect of life, there is no crack through which hopelessness and worry can slip in. When everything, every aspect of our being is wrapped in the Light of Hope, there is no entryway for anything other than who He is, and He is our All In All. He is our Comfort, our Shield and our Protect. And ultimately, He is Judge.
The Psalmist gives us a promise here, which is extremely important to hold onto. He says, “The Lord is King forever and ever! The godless nations will vanish from the land. Lord, You know the hopes of the helpless. Surely You will hear their cries and comfort them. You will bring justice to the orphans and the oppressed, so mere people can no longer terrify them” (Psalm 10:16-18).
Hold on to the promises of the Lord, for He cannot lie and He cannot break a promise. The wicked may have the appearance of prosperity, but it is a facade. It is an illusion that will be torn down in the end, revealing the torment under the surface. In the end, only the justice of the Just One will prevail.
