“I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one can come to the Father except through Me.” – John 14:6 (NLT)
Honestly, this should be one of those “goes without saying” kind of things. But, unless you’ve been living with your head in the sand, this simple truth of Jesus has been long forgotten and thrown out by so many professing “Christians” in our society today. Jesus Christ is the only Way. He is the only Truth. And only in Him is there Life. Apart from Him is only death and lies.
Jesus is the Truth and the Absolute, but we live in a society where they teach that truth is relative to the individual person. It’s a modern day Tower of Babel really. If Jesus is the Truth and the Absolute, then He is the Absolute Truth. Only through Him can anyone be saved, and they are only saved by His Truth. By abiding in Truth, in Jesus.
“If you love Me, obey My commandments.” – John 14:15
In the Greek, that word “obey” means to guard. So following Jesus is not just obeying His commands, but also guarding them, for they are life itself. Because we have failed to guard His commands, to guard His Truth, we are now reaping the consequences for letting our guard down. For not obeying Him. Not abiding in Him.
“Those who accept My commandments and obey them are the ones who love Me. And because they love Me, My Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal Myself to each of them.” – John 14:21
Why is it that we have such a hard time understanding and grasping this simple concept? Jesus made this whole thing so simple, yet we in our normal, human nature have turned it into something so complicated. But here is the simple Truth: Either we love Him and we obey His commands, His Truth; or, we do not love Him nor His Truth, and we follow our own way of doing things. And if we do not love Him, the Son, then the Father does not love us. In fact, in our refusal to love the Son, who is the Truth, we have alienated ourselves from God, and His righteous anger burns against us.
These are the words of Jesus Himself! We should be trembling in fear before Him that there are many who profess Him as Lord and Savior, but they are far from Him. They do not actually love Him, they merely love the benefits He promises. But those benefits are only promised to those who love Him, so they are worse off than they were before having heard of Him.
Guys, I tremble as I write this! The reality of these words, the weight of what they mean, it is not a light burden. This is the Father’s heart, because He truly desires that none would perish. Yet unless we turn from our wicked ways and begin to abide in the Life of the Truth, we are as far from Him as the East is from the West. We have no place in Him, and He has no place in us.
Father, let the reality of these words sweep over us. Let the Truth of who You are break us out of the funk that this world has gotten us into, and bring us back into true living and abiding in You. Not what we have deemed it to be today, but what Your Word has told us it is. Anything less than this is to be an outsider and an outcast from Your presence.
Do you truly love Jesus, the ONLY Way, Truth, and Life? Or are you merely trying to save face by putting on a label that carries no power?
