“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through Him, and nothing was created except through Him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and His life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” – John 1:1-5 (NLT)
The Gospel according to John. My favorite of the four Gospel accounts. Each of the four carry such amazing power and wisdom, but John taps into a level of profound wisdom and revelation that the other three writers don’t convey in their accounts. I mean, the first five verses alone have my mind swirling with so many thoughts and revelations already, and I’ve read John numerous times already!
“He came into the very world He created, but the world didn’t recognize Him. He came to His own people, and even they rejected Him. But to all who believed in Him and accepted Him, He gave the right to become children of God.” – John 1:10-12
“He” meaning the Word. “He” meaning Jesus Christ, the Son of God. “He” meaning the very being of life Himself.
Do you see the picture that John is painting here? He is making it impossible for there to be any other conclusion made except for this one thing: Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the Word of God. He is the One who was sent to earth, clothed in human flesh, so that He might shine a light into the darkness and illuminate those things done in the dark. He came to bring life, and this life is only found in Him and through Him, the Word. Apart from Him, apart from the Word, there is only death and darkness.
Rejection of the Word is a direct rejection of Jesus. You cannot have Jesus without having the Word, because HE IS THE VERY WORD OF GOD! I think we fail to see this in our society. In our Americanized church culture. We forget this. I can’t tell you the last time I actually heard a pastor preach on this passage of Scripture and they make the emphasis on Jesus Christ being the Word. We blow right by it, and because of this we have forgotten and lost sight of the Truth, which is Jesus.
We live in a society where the truth has been made into whatever we want it to be. The truth is according to how we feel. We have taken the Truth, the Word of God which is Jesus, and we have replaced it with our own “truth.” As a result, we have made ourselves to be god. Thank the Lord that the Truth does not change, no matter how hard people try to ignore it or do away with it! The Truth of the Gospel is absolute, and there is no power that can ever change that.
The Truth, the Word, Jesus Christ Himself illuminates the darkness. This is why so many reject Him. They don’t want to be illuminated by the light, but they want to remain in darkness and in their life of evil deeds. And because of this, they reject the only Truth which can save them, and in turn reject Jesus Himself. Though there are many who claim to believe in and follow Him, their lives reject Him because they reject the Truth, which is Christ.
You can not have Christ without the realization that He is Truth
And this means that we must accept the whole Truth, not just what we want to accept. It is an all or nothing kind of thing. God does not tolerate cherry picking. He does not give us a choice on what we follow and what we don’t. He simply says, “Follow and obey My Son, who is the very Word of My being.”
If we say we believe in Jesus, then we MUST realize this means we believe in the Word of God. Meaning, we believe in the Bible, which is the Word of God, in its entirety. We do not taint it. We do not water it down for the sake of not offending people. The Truth will always offend those who do not want to hear it, no matter how loving we are in our presentation of it. The Truth is a sword that separates bone and marrow. It cuts us deep to the core in order that we would have our old nature separated from us. It is the only way to true life. All other “ways” are lies that lead straight to death.
“Then He said, ‘I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the One who is the Stairway between heaven and earth.'” – John 1:51
I love this!!!! To many people nowadays live according to their opinions. They try to replace the word with the world and, it’s just simply wrong. Even preachers try to preach their opinions. Preaching the word according to the world so they don’t offend anyone and, it is also just wrong.

Dear Brandon
Hello from the UK. Many thanks for your post, excellent. I am like you, my favorite of the four Gospel accounts is John and for the same reason. I see it as the eagle soaring in the heavens, looking down, seeing the whole picture, not just the detail.
Kind regards
